"Follow the Leader...Down to the Detail"
Ephesians 5:17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
In the verse before this one, Paul encouraged us to make the most of every opportunity. Next, he tells us to not be foolish but to understand the will of the Lord.
Anything outside of the Lord's will is foolishness. Paul is indirectly telling us God has a plan for our ENTIRE lives… right down to the smallest detail and if we don’t pay attention to that plan, it is foolishness. Do you know what God’s plan is? It is that He should get the glory in each detail or opportunity in our lives. When you know that God is in the details, it opens up so many more opportunities to bring Him glory.
So many times, I get hung up on the longer-term part of God’s will. I want to know where He is taking me a year from now or five years from now. As it turns out, God seems more interested in where he is taking me today. He can’t take me where He wants me to go later, if I don’t let Him take me where he wants me to go today.
May God show us His will in the "routine" of our lives. Let us learn to follow Him in even our mundane activities. This is challenging for me. For example, when I used to drive to work, I woud listen to sermons, yet during some of those times I was not focused on God at all. I would get angry at other drivers and sometimes express that anger under my breath. This is certainly not God's will.
The Bible tells us that whether we eat or drink or whatever we do, we can do it to God’s glory. So, give that a try this week. Give him glory when you eat, when you sleep, and when you listen to the news. Ask Him to be with you in the details of your life today. He will be with you and he will show you His will for today. As you follow Him day by day, He will eventually lead you where you are supposed to be in the future.
