"Working the Works: Joining God’s Mission in the Everyday"

Scripture Focus: John 9:1-5

Have you ever noticed how quick we are to try to explain things, especially when life gets hard? That’s exactly what happened when Jesus and His disciples came across a man who had been born blind. The disciples immediately started asking questions: “Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

It’s a question that feels familiar, doesn’t it? We all want to connect the dots and figure out the “why” behind suffering. But Jesus didn’t go there. Instead, He reframed the whole situation. “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” He said. “This happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.”

And then, Jesus made this powerful statement: “As long as it is day, we must do the works of Him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.” In other words, Jesus saw this man’s life—not as a problem to solve, but as an opportunity for God’s glory to shine.

Seeing Your Work as Part of God’s Mission

What if we started looking at our lives the same way Jesus did? God is at work all around you—right now, in your workplace, in your neighborhood, even in the seemingly ordinary moments of your day. And the beautiful thing is, He’s inviting you to be part of it.

Your work—whether it’s at a desk, in a classroom, at home, or somewhere else—isn’t just about crossing items off your to-do list. It’s so much bigger than that. It’s an opportunity to reflect God’s love, serve others, and show His truth in action.

And here’s the catch: our time to do this is limited. “Night is coming,” Jesus said. None of us know how much time we have to live out our calling, so let’s make the most of it.

Let’s Talk About You

Take a moment to think about the people and situations around you:

  • Where do you see God at work in the lives of others?
  • Are there people you interact with who might need a word of encouragement or a helping hand?
  • How can you bring a little more of God’s love and truth into your everyday tasks?

Simple Ways to Join God’s Work

Here are a few practical ideas to help you get started:

  1. Be Present: Slow down. Pay attention. Sometimes the best opportunities to share God’s love come through something as simple as a kind word or truly listening to someone’s story.
  2. Pray for Eyes to See: Start your day with a simple prayer: “Lord, show me where You’re working today, and help me to step in with courage and love.”
  3. Do Your Best: Your attitude and work ethic speak volumes. When you approach your work with excellence and integrity, it reflects God’s character to those around you.

A Word of Encouragement

Jesus’ words remind us of something important: your work, your efforts, and even your small, unnoticed acts of kindness matter. They’re all part of a much bigger story. You’re partnering with the Creator of the universe to bring light and hope into the world.

So, whether you’re answering emails, teaching kids, or lending a listening ear, remember—what you’re doing is part of God’s mission. And when you partner with Him, He’ll use your efforts in ways you can’t even imagine.

Prayer
"Lord, thank You for inviting me into Your mission. Help me to see my daily work as an opportunity to show Your love and truth. Open my eyes to the people and needs around me, and give me the courage to respond. May everything I do point others to You. Amen."
