Most of us don't mind trusting God...
Until trusting Him costs us something.
That's where faith gets real.
Imagine what Abraham must have been feeling. For years he had waited for Isaac. He laughed when God first made the promise because it seemed impossible. Then, against all odds, God kept His word.
Now God was asking Abraham to place that very promise on the altar.
Why would God do that?
Not because He wanted Isaac.
Because He wanted Abraham's heart.
There's an important lesson here. Sometimes we begin trusting the gifts God gives us more than the God who gave them. A career. A relationship. Our health. Our plans for the future. None of those things are wrong, but they can, over time, become the place where we find our security.
God loves us too much to let that happen.
So He tests our faith.
Not to discover what's in our hearts—He already knows.
He tests our faith so we can discover what's in our hearts.
Peter wrote that our faith is "of greater worth than gold" because it is refined through fire (1 Peter 1:7). Gold isn't destroyed by the fire. It's purified. The same is true of our faith. The trials we would gladly avoid are often the very things God uses to remove what doesn't belong and strengthen what does.
Following Jesus has never been a bargain that costs us nothing.
It costs us our pride.
Our self-reliance.
Our need to be in control.
But what we receive in return is far greater.
We discover that Christ is enough.
And once you discover that...
You realize you never really lost anything worth keeping.
Reflect
- Has God ever used a difficult season to reveal where your trust was really resting?
- Is there something you're holding so tightly that God may be asking you to surrender to Him?
Pray
Father, thank You for loving me enough to grow my faith. When You allow trials into my life, help me remember that You are refining me, not abandoning me. Teach me to trust You more than the gifts You've given me, and help me find my security in Christ alone. Amen.
