The Direction of Faith

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to look back?
It is not because the past was better.
It is because the past is familiar.
When life gets hard, we can start believing that going backward is safer than moving forward. We remember what was comfortable and forget why God called us to leave it behind.
The people in Hebrews 11 had that same choice. They could have returned home. No one was forcing them to keep following God. Yet they kept moving forward because they believed what God had promised was better than what they had left.
That's faith.
Faith isn't pretending the road is easy. It's choosing to believe that God is leading you somewhere worth going.
One of the ways God grows us is through these moments of decision. Will we trust what we can see, or will we trust the One who sees what we cannot?
That's where faith becomes more than a belief—it becomes obedience.
Notice something else in the passage. The writer doesn't simply tell us they were looking for a better life. They were looking for a better country. Their hope reached beyond temporary comfort to God's eternal promises. They understood that this world could never satisfy the deepest longings of the human heart.
Neither can ours.
Maybe today you're tempted to go back—to an old habit, an old way of thinking, or simply a life that felt easier.
Don't confuse what's familiar with what's faithful.
The God who called Abraham is the same God who calls you. He hasn't changed. His promises haven't changed. And He has never led one of His children down a path that was ultimately for their harm.
Keep taking the next step.
You don't have to see the whole journey to trust the One who is leading it.

- Is there an area of your life where you're tempted to look back instead of moving forward with God?
- What is one step of obedience God is asking you to take today?
Pray
Father, thank You for calling me to something better than the comfort of the familiar. When I'm tempted to look back, remind me of Your faithfulness. Give me the courage to trust You with my next step, knowing that Your plans are always good and Your promises never fail. Strengthen my faith as I continue to follow You. Amen.
