Get Your Eyes Off the Cup

It is easy to focus on what might go wrong.

The instability.
The uncertainty.
The risk.

Have you ever tried to carry a cup of hot tea across a room?

The more you stare at the cup, trying not to spill it, the harder it becomes to walk steadily. Your hands tighten. Your steps get awkward. Your focus turns into fear.

But when you lift your eyes and look toward where you are going, something changes. You move with more confidence.

Faith works that way too.

Abraham lived in tents, but he was not focused on tents. He was not building his life around what was temporary. He was looking toward what God had promised.

Scripture

“He was looking forward to the city… whose architect and builder is God.”
— Hebrews 11:10

Your focus shapes your faith.

Peter walked on water until he focused on the storm.

We do the same.

When circumstances get loud, God’s promises can feel distant. The pressure becomes all we can see. The “what ifs” start filling the room. Before long, we are staring at the cup, trying not to spill what we were never meant to carry in fear.

But faith is not pretending reality is easy.

Faith is choosing to look beyond your current reality and fix your eyes on the One who is faithful.

Abraham looked forward.
Peter had to look back to Jesus.
And we are invited to do the same.

So where are your eyes right now?

On the pressure?
On the risk?
On what might go wrong?

Or on God?

Reflect

What circumstances are pulling your focus away from God?

What would it look like to refocus on Him this week?

Pray

God, help me fix my eyes on You, not my circumstances.
When fear pulls my attention toward what might go wrong, remind me to look toward You.
Strengthen my focus so my faith does not drift.
Amen.

Memory Verse

“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.”
— Hebrews 11:6 NIV
